An exclusive private retreat, often frequented by celebrities, at the foot of Mount Kenya. This is the perfect honeymoon destination for a Kenyan safari.

The lodge was built is 1992 by local artisans. Only local building materials and dead wood from the ranch were used in its construction. The result is a supremely comfortable and luxurious lodge which is totally in keeping with its surroundings; it seems to have grown organically from the rocks on which it was built.

Borana Lodge overlooks a dam which fills with the floodwater flowing off the surrounding hills. It is the local watering hole for all the wildlife in the area so there is constant activity for the guests to watch. There is also a game blind built right on the edge of the dam so that visitors may go down and see the activity at close range: elephants swimming is a favourite viewing.

Accommodation:

Borana Lodge is built primarily for privacy; each cottage is exclusively sited with its own special view, totally secluded from its neighbour. This ensures guests have a chance to appreciate the wilderness and loneliness of Africa.

There is a central eating and sitting area: comfy, leather sofas surround a huge fireplace with picture windows looking onto the valley below. A massive rosewood table in the dining room is where meals are served by friendly and attentive staff. Local artists' paintings and sculptures decorate the Lodge, and are also available for sale.

All food is freshly prepared in the kitchen; vegetables and farm produce from the farm, freshly squeezed juice from our orchard and wines from around the world.

What people say:

"I'll start by saying this lodge is a truly special place - one of those places you feel privileged to have stumbled across. We stayed here as part of our honeymoon and had the most amazing time. The location is stunning - you are literally in the middle of nowhere and with only 8 rooms the 30,000 acres of private land you are able to explore truly feel like your own.

We had our own guide (David - who was also incredible) just for the two of us, which meant we could decide exactly what we wanted to do each day - whether it be a horse riding safari, a walking safari or a game drive. You also have easy access to the Lewa Downs conservation area next door which is home to a rhino sanctuary project. This gave us the opportunity to see loads of white and (the extremely rare) black rhino.

The service at the lodge is second to none. The food is amazing and dinner is served around one huge table where all the guests get to chat about their day's activities. This may seem a bit invasive but it somehow seems to work and proved to be a real highlight of our trip.

The rooms are extremely private - sort of wooden hut style - and ours had its own outdoor seating area. Each of rooms overlook a watering hole where you can always see animals drinking or bathing. Disney stayed here while researching the Lion King and you will see a number of familar sites - Pride Rock for example as well as many of the animals featured in the film (such a Zazu the bird, Pumba the warthog and of course lions!). The lodge also has its own sort of pet - George the Kudu -  who wanders in and out of the camp whenever it pleases him.

Amory, the lodge manager, was fantastic throughout our stay. Extremely friendly, yet professional and you truly felt he wanted to do everything he could to make your stay as perfect as possible. Nothing is too much trouble here.

I couldn't recommend this lodge enough. I do not think I will ever stay anywhere better."
