Travelogue: My favourite place in Ireland is Simon?s Cove. It is a small, rocky beach near Clonakilty in west Cork that is slowly being eaten by the voracious Atlantic. Accessed by a wickedly, winding dirt-road, Simon?s Cove offers visitors a challenge as well as a reward. Parking is not for the faint-hearted and a small miscalculation could see your car topple into the unforgiving sea or rocky outcrops below. There are two sides with a sandy beach on one side and a rocky one on the other. The sandy beach may seem the better bet with easier access however if you venture to the western beach the rewards are far greater. Make your way down an almost vertical, rutted path and you come across an outdoor swimming pool hidden away from the rest of the world. Surrounded on all sides by ten feet high walls of rock, the pool can only be fully appreciated at high tide. With the water warmed by the surrounding stones braver locals are seen jumping from the sides into the refreshing waters. Simon?s Cove is known about by very few people and I think of it as my own private swimming pool in the Atlantic Ocean.
